A little DIY tip for you, old as the hills this one, my Dad taught me this trick way back when...
It's the best solution to this problem, longer or thicker screws are a bad idea and might split wood... personally I've always put in a bit of wood glue as well, but you don't have to... I just always over engineer stuff when doing DIY!
